Green-lipped mussel

The green-lipped mussel, also known as the Perna Canaliculus, is a shellfish found in the waters around New Zealand. This powerhouse is one of the largest mussel species. For example, green-lipped mussels of up to 22 cm have been found. They also look very beautiful: the shells are brown with a strikingly bright, emerald green color on the edges. The Maori – the indigenous people of New Zealand – who lived on the coast have been eating raw green-lipped mussels as a regular part of their diet for as long as anyone can remember.

The mollusk is highly prized for the many health benefits it provides. Not only tasty, but also extremely healthy. Here’s why:

1. Anti-inflammatory properties:

Green-lipped mussels contain omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), which have a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation can contribute to several health problems in dogs, including arthritis, skin infections, ear infections, intestinal infections, allergies, gum disease and autoimmune diseases. These inflammation-related conditions range from joint problems to skin and gastrointestinal complaints.

Green-lipped mussels contain GAGs (glycosaminoglycans), including chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. These substances are essential for the health of joint cartilage and can help maintain the shock-absorbing properties of joints.

3. Antioxidants:

Green-lipped mussels contain antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin E, which help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Older dogs may be more prone to the buildup of free radicals because the body’s ability to neutralize them decreases with age. Exposure to pollution, smoke, pesticides and other environmental contaminants can also lead to an increase in free radicals in a dog’s body.

4. Zinc:

Zinc is an essential mineral with crucial functions in the body of both humans and dogs. It supports the immune system, promotes wound healing, plays a role in growth and development and is essential for fertility because it is necessary for the production of certain reproductive hormones. In dogs, a zinc deficiency can lead to skin problems, reduced immunity and other health complications.
