The cranberry has its origins in North America. In the Netherlands, the cranberry also grows on the Wadden Island of Terschelling.
Although many people think of cranberries as a bladder support agent, these berries have much more to offer for your dog’s health. Cranberries are rich in antioxidants and bioactive substances, and serve as a source of various vitamins and minerals.
The berries of the cranberry bush (Vaccinium macrocarpon) therefore contribute to general health, mainly due to their very high antioxidant content. These antioxidants include stilbenes such as pterostilbene, triterpenoids and flavonoids such as proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins and flavonols. Scientific studies suggest that the antioxidants in cranberries counteract aging processes and protect against conditions such as cancer, heart disease, caries/periodontal disease and neurodegenerative disorders.
1. Bladder infections:
A natural miracle cure for bladder infections. In addition to vitamin C, the cranberry also contains the bioactive substances ‘proanthocyanidins’. These not only ensure that bacteria cannot adhere to the bladder wall, but also that bacteria that have adhered to the bladder wall are loosened. The berries are therefore effective in treating AND preventing bladder infections.
2. For skin problems:
These nutritious berries are also known to help with skin problems such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and dermatitis. Dogs with skin problems also benefit from this. Furthermore, the active ingredients also slow down the skin aging process. This is due to the antioxidants that ensure that toxins are efficiently removed from the blood.
3. Healthy for the teeth:
Researchers in Canada and Japan have studied the effect of cranberries on tooth decay and gum problems. What have they discovered? The sour berry seems to reduce the adhesion of bacteria that are harmful to the teeth. Ideal for dogs that suffer from gum infections or excessive plaque.
4. Good for mental health:
Cranberries contain tryptophan, an amino acid known as the precursor to serotonin. Eating foods containing tryptophan has been scientifically proven to increase serotonin production, leading to an improved mental state of mind. In addition, this little fruit has positive effects on the brain and also improves memory.
