Chicory

Chicory is a leafy vegetable that belongs to the chicory family. It is a specific variety of chicory (Cichorium intybus) grown for its edible, light-colored, crunchy leaves. It has a characteristic light yellow to white color and a subtle, slightly bitter taste.

Chicory is mainly used for dogs because of the support that its ingredients can provide for digestive problems.

1. Specific dietary fibers:

Chicory mainly contains soluble fiber (inulin, cellulose and pectin) and a smaller amount of insoluble fiber. Inulin is a soluble fiber with prebiotic properties, which means that this type of fiber promotes the growth and activity of beneficial intestinal bacteria.

Pectin helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.

2. Diuretic effect:

Chicory has a mild diuretic effect, which means that it has a diuretic effect. Diuretic vegetables can benefit dogs by increasing urine production and helping the body eliminate excess fluid. Diuretic foods contain substances that stimulate kidney function and promote the formation of urine. It is mainly the fiber inulin that has an effect here.

3. Hydration:

The high moisture content in chicory can contribute to the hydration of dogs. Adequate fluid levels are vital for the functioning of all cells, tissues and organs in the body. It also supports the function of the circulatory system and helps transport nutrients to the cells. In addition, sufficient fluid intake supports the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients and the formation of stool.

4. Low in calories:

Chicory is generally low in calories, so it can be a healthy and light addition to a dog’s diet without making them fat. Chicory is therefore an ideal addition to dog food for dogs with a tendency to be overweight.

5. Healthy nutrients:

Chicory contains several essential nutrients such as vitamins (e.g. vitamin A and vitamin K), minerals (e.g. potassium and folic acid) and antioxidants.
For example, vitamin A helps with the production of immune cells, making the body better able to fight infections.

Folic acid is involved in the formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow. Adequate folic acid helps prevent anemia by ensuring that the body has enough red blood cells to transport oxygen.
