Anchovies

Anchovies are small, silver-colored fish from the herring family. These schools of fish thrive in waters with temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Anchovies are commonly found in the coastal waters of the Mediterranean, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. They prefer well-ventilated areas with strong currents, where they feed on plankton and small fish. Anchovies play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem as prey for various predators.

1. Omega-3 fatty acids and effect on skin and coat:

As a rich source of EPA and DHA, they can help keep your dog’s coat and skin healthy. Dogs that generally eat little or no fish may eventually suffer from dry skin and flakes.

In addition, these fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect. This means that anchovies can have a supportive effect on, for example, allergy and itching complaints.

2. Proteins:

Anchovies are an excellent source of high-quality protein. Protein is essential for the growth, recovery and overall health of your dog’s muscles. The entire body AND immune system is made up of proteins. Puppies, pregnant bitches, older animals, sick animals and sporting dogs generally have a higher protein requirement.

3. Vitamins and minerals:

Anchovies contain a wide range of important vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, D, B3, B12, selenium, iron and calcium. All of these nutrients can contribute to your dog’s bone health, eye health and immune system, among other things. Vitamin B3 helps convert food into energy.

4. Low mercury content:

Compared to other types of fish, anchovies have a relatively low mercury content. Heavy metals such as mercury in high quantities can eventually affect the nervous system, lead to an increased risk of heart problems, promote kidney problems and suppress the immune system.

5. Supports brain health:

The omega-3 fatty acids in anchovies may also support brain health and contribute to cognitive development in puppies. In addition, they can delay the development of neurodegenerative diseases (dementia for example).
